Summer Camp Makes STEM and Innovation Relatable and Cool

This summer, the IQhub is excited to offer a fun learning opportunity for 2nd through 5th grade students. The Camp Invention® program introduces young innovators to invention and innovation in a way that makes the process relatable and fun.

NEW programs this year! At the IQhub, campers will attend two sessions over three days:

Become an Innovative Champion!

In Camp Invention Champions, children uncover the game-changing inventors behind their favorite sports. Inspired by these NIHF Inductees, campers design their own games and the equipment used to play them. Throughout the week, they will trade inventor playing cards in order to assemble their ultimate “Innovation Dream Team,” and they can keep these cards when the program ends. By applying creative problem-solving skills, they have the opportunity to design and build their very own sports complex, which they can also take home and further develop over time. In addition to these fun take-home items, children who attend Camp Invention are presented with real-world challenges that build intellectual property literacy, promote empathy and collaboration, and foster crucial 21st-century skills including entrepreneurship, persistence and problem solving. By working together with their peers on engaging challenges, children develop their confidence as creators who aren’t afraid to identify and solve problems.

Brighten Possibilities in SolarBot

Inspired by live crickets, SolarBot combines the life of insects with robots and the power of solar energy! First, children build and adopt their very own solar-powered cricket. Then they experience a cricket’s point of view as they design and build habitats, cricket-inspired inventions and protective gear to outsmart predators. Participants also explore topics including sustainability, physics and engineering to design tire swings, trampolines and other playground equipment. To wrap up the experience, students jump into cricket anatomy and learn how crickets create sound. Inspired by this discovery, they go on to construct musical instruments to compete in a grand finale Chirp-Off!

“Camp Invention is sort of messy and impulsive,” said Steve Sasson, inventor of the digital camera and National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) Inductee. “Kids take advantage of the environment around them to mold their visions. And this is what inventors do. Camp teaches kids what inventing is all about.” Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by some of our nation’s greatest inventors — the NIHF Inductees.
